Chief Justice nominee, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has confirmed his qualifications and preparedness to take on the role of Chief Justice, responding to allegations that his nomination was driven by political motives.
During his examination by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, November 10, 2025, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie dismissed claims that his nomination was a reward for supporting President John Dramani Mahama during the 2013 election petition.
He stressed his neutrality, stating that he “cuts across all political lineage.”
“The President must have his reason. I am unaware of that. I firmly believe I am qualified for the position of Chief Justice. I think I am deserving of that role. I possess the necessary qualities to lead the judiciary,” he remarked.
His vetting occurs following the dismissal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo. The Minority in Parliament had previously opposed the vetting process, citing ongoing court cases concerning her removal. Subsequently, the minority boycotted the vetting and rejected his nomination.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s remarks highlight his claim that his nomination is founded on merit and competence rather than political connections.
