Body of One-Week-Old Baby Retrieved from Toilet Pit in Suhum
Suhum, Eastern Region – September 24, 2025
The Suhum Municipal Fire Service has recovered the lifeless body of a one-week-old baby boy from a toilet pit at Ali, a suburb of Suhum, in what is suspected to be a tragic case of infanticide.
The discovery was made early yesterday near Gateway Preparatory School after the Fire Service received a distress call at approximately 6:30 a.m. An 11-member rescue team, led by ASTNO Danso Henry, arrived at the scene within minutes and began a carefully coordinated operation.
By 7:00 a.m., the baby’s body was retrieved from the pit, but he was unfortunately unresponsive.
Preliminary investigations suggest the baby may have been dumped by his mother, who is currently at large. The body has since been handed over to the Ghana Police Service as investigations continue.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) commended the Suhum rescue team for their swift and professional handling of what it described as an emotionally difficult mission.
