Tensions escalated at the Akwatia Lorry Station in the Vawaso Electoral Area on Tuesday, during the ongoing by-election. A dispute arose between Alhaji Osman Masawudu, the third National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and the escort of the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka.
Describing the incident, Alhaji Masawudu stated that the confrontation took place while he was addressing the media near the Akwatia Zongo area, where he had been assigned to oversee the elections.
“I have been tasked with supervising and monitoring the election at Akwatia Zongo. In fact, I was in the midst of an interview when a national vice chairman of the NDC, Azorka, approached me directly during my interview to confront me,” Masawudu recounted.
He claimed that the altercation occurred in the presence of law enforcement officials.
“This incident transpired in front of the police. He stated that today he would ensure that I would be beaten here, along with Afenyo-Markin,” he added.
Witnesses confirmed that the confrontation escalated rapidly, with a member of Azorka’s escort allegedly striking Masawudu before police intervened to restore order. No arrests have been reported thus far.
This clash contributes to a series of confrontations between supporters of the two primary political parties as voting proceeds across 119 polling stations in the Akwatia Constituency.
Over 50,000 registered voters are anticipated to cast their votes by the close of polls in this high-stakes by-election.
