The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, has denied allegations regarding a prolonged water supply shortage in regions within the Effutu Constituency.
In a letter dated August 20, 2025, the Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, indicated that water disruptions lasting over two weeks have resulted in considerable hardship for the constituency’s population, which exceeds 140,000.
During a media briefing following his visit to the Winneba Water Treatment Plant on Monday, September 1, the Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited emphasized that the current situation contradicts the claims of water shortages, affirming that the water supply in the Effutu area has remained steady.
“The data available in my office does not corroborate the assertion made by him [Afenyo-Markin], and thus, it was necessary to conduct a visit to verify the claim. It is clear that the assertion lacks factual support.
“The Winneba Headworks generates 9,700 cubic meters of water each day. There have been no interruptions for approximately six hours, a full day, two days, or three days; there have been no interruptions. Analyzing the data does not validate the claim he has made.
As a former Board Chair of GWL, if there were any evidence, he should have reached out to the management of GWL. I want to assert unequivocally that the claim that 140,000 customers have been impacted due to the shutdown is not substantiated by the facts on the ground,” he remarked.
The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited also mentioned that significant progress has been made in restoring water supply to customers whose lines have been affected by the ongoing expansion project of the Kasoa-Winneba highway.
