The legal representatives of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, along with Akonta Mining, have indicated their plan to seek a court order that would require the prosecution to provide additional documents deemed crucial for their defence.
The legal team asserts that significant materials necessary for preparing their case were not included in the disclosures submitted by the State.
Antwi-Boasiako, commonly referred to as Chairman Wontumi, and Akonta Mining are currently facing trial over accusations of allowing mining activities on their Samreboi concession without obtaining the necessary approvals.
The hearing scheduled for Tuesday, November 25, which is intended for a case management conference, was anticipated to establish the foundation for the trial.
However, lead defence attorney Andy Appiah-Kubi informed the court that a formal request for further disclosures would be submitted.
This announcement followed the prosecution’s assertion that the documents provided on October 31 and November 11 represent the complete set of materials they plan to utilise during the trial.
Appiah-Kubi conveyed to the court that the defence had anticipated receiving supplementary disclosures, which include documents in the prosecution’s possession that may not be presented as evidence but could still aid the accused during case management.
He mentioned that while the defence had already prepared a motion requesting full disclosure, it had not yet been filed, leading to the request for additional time.
The presiding judge instructed the defence to file and serve the motion on the prosecution as soon as it is ready.
Additionally, the court mandated the accused individuals to provide the names and addresses of all witnesses they intend to call during the trial, should the prosecution establish a prima facie case.
The case has been postponed to December 8, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., when the defence’s request for additional disclosures is anticipated to be addressed.
