Actor Salinko has voiced his apprehension regarding the increasing prevalence of insults and abusive content on social media, cautioning that if this trend continues unchecked, it may jeopardize the social fabric of Ghana.
In addressing the matter, Salinko underscored the risks associated with individuals using cameras to direct insults at esteemed figures, including the President. He linked this trend to self-styled social commentators residing abroad, whose actions are now being emulated by individuals within the country.
“The situation on social media is concerning. Individuals, particularly those living overseas, feel entitled to insult leaders and respected figures, neglecting the repercussions it has on our home front. This behavior is encouraging the youth to replicate such disorderly conduct,” he remarked.
Salinko also pointed out that several individuals have already encountered legal repercussions for making reckless remarks, including wishing harm upon the President, Vice President, and their families.
Additionally, he urged political figures to advocate for clean politics, stressing that democracy should not be founded on propaganda, insults, or disrespect.
“This country belongs to us, and it is our duty to safeguard it. Politics and democracy can be conducted with integrity. We need not undermine one another with disrespect,” Salinko emphasized.
His remarks add to the increasing calls for responsible use of social media, as worries grow about the effects of online misconduct on Ghana’s political and social cohesion.
