The Central Regional Minister, Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere, has assured the residents that the government is intensifying its efforts to combat illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, in the Central Region.
He disclosed that the Regional Security Council, with assistance from the central government, is ramping up operations against the illegal trade, which has already led to the closure of several water treatment facilities.
While addressing journalists in Accra on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, Mr. Okyere emphasized that galamsey can be eradicated, but cautioned that this battle necessitates a unified approach.
“The struggle against galamsey is not a task that can be managed by a single individual; it requires a collaborative effort. Therefore, I urge everyone to join forces and contribute their strengths to ensure its resolution.
“At present, it has evolved into an issue of mindset, where individuals believe that the path to wealth is through searching for gold in water bodies. Thus, I believe the government is making significant efforts, but citizens must also alter their mindset so that we can all achieve clean water,” he stated.
The Minister highlighted the critical role of public support in achieving sustainable solutions, pointing out that without a change in attitudes, mere enforcement will not suffice to protect the region’s water resources and environment.
