The Supreme Court has set April 2, 2025, to consider an injunction application submitted by Vincent Assafuah, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Old Tafo.
This legal action questions the procedural validity of President John Mahama’s steps concerning the possible dismissal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, which follows the submission of three petitions.
In the interim, Chief Justice Torkonoo has reached out to the President, also sending copies to relevant parties, to request access to the three petitions that call for her removal from her position.
On Tuesday, the presidency revealed that President Mahama is in consultation with the Council of State regarding the three petitions received about the Chief Justice’s potential removal.
Meanwhile, Assafuah is invoking the Supreme Court’s original jurisdiction as outlined in Article 2(1)(b) of the Constitution, seeking several declarations on the correct interpretation of the constitutional provisions that regulate the removal of a Chief Justice.
