Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, has conveyed his deep sorrow over Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju’s unfortunate demise.
Olanrewaju lost his life following a light-heavyweight match against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
In a press release issued on March 31, 2025, Adams offered his sincere condolences on behalf of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Government of Ghana.
He characterized Gabriel as a gifted and dedicated athlete who displayed remarkable bravery in the ring, labeling his premature death as an irreplaceable loss to the boxing community.
“We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC), the entire Nigerian boxing community, and the worldwide boxing fraternity over this significant loss,” Adams remarked.
He pointed out that Gabriel’s tragic passing highlights the unpredictable nature of the sport.
While awaiting the official medical report regarding the cause of death, Adams assured the public of the Ministry’s complete cooperation with the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to ensure a comprehensive investigation.
He reiterated the Ministry’s dedication to enhancing athlete safety to avert similar occurrences in the future.
The Minister also expressed his thoughts and prayers for Gabriel’s family, friends, and colleagues during this challenging period.
He called upon the global boxing community to unite to honor Gabriel’s legacy and prioritize the welfare of athletes.
Adams concluded with a heartfelt wish, stating, “May the soul of Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju rest in perfect peace.”
