The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has strongly condemned the individuals involved in the management of the AirtelTigo transaction, labeling them as “enemies of the state” due to the sale of the telecommunications firm.
He expressed his discontent regarding the decision to sell AirtelTigo, which carries a debt of GHC3.5 billion, for a mere dollar.
During a press briefing in Parliament on Monday, March 24, the Minister challenged the patriotism of those who facilitated the sale.
“Those who oversaw the AirtelTigo transaction are adversaries of our nation and lack any sense of patriotism. It is astonishing that anyone would claim they acquired AirtelTigo for just one dollar, especially now that we have assumed control of the ministry. The American Tower Company (ATC), one of AirtelTigo’s creditors, has already presented us with a bill amounting to 1.5 billion Ghana Cedis,” he remarked.
He also revealed that discussions with representatives from the American Embassy highlighted significant concerns regarding AirtelTigo’s financial obligations.
“The American Embassy, along with their team, met with me, and one of the primary issues discussed was the debt owed to ATC. The financial liabilities of AirtelTigo exceed 3.5 billion Ghana Cedis.
“So, if someone claims they purchased it for one dollar, who will be responsible for the 1.3 billion that is accruing interest?” he inquired.
