The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued a stern warning to the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region, threatening legal action against those who do not remove unauthorized billboards from road medians by Monday, June 2, 2025.
This warning comes after a failed engagement with the assemblies, as many did not attend a scheduled meeting with the Authority to discuss a compliance roadmap.
In a statement to the media, NRSA Director-General Abraham Amaliba expressed his disappointment at what he characterized as a defiant attitude from the assembly members.
“We invited all of them through the Local Government Ministry. They misunderstood and assumed the invitation was for all assemblies across the nation, which is why some representatives came from outside Accra,” he stated.
“Those who were supposed to attend from Accra did not show up. We are interpreting their absence as a deliberate act of noncompliance, and we will move forward with legal action against the assemblies that have disregarded our directive.”
Amaliba noted that the NRSA had originally set a 21-day deadline for the removal of the billboards and had planned to use the meeting to propose an extension. However, the absence of the relevant assemblies has left the Authority with no alternative but to initiate legal proceedings.
“This indicates that they are not interested in complying. Therefore, our next step will be to confront them in court,” he added.
The NRSA maintains that this action is essential to safeguard public safety, which it claims is being compromised by the existence of unauthorized structures along roadways.
