Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has emphasized the strategic significance of Ghana–China collaboration in enhancing the nation’s energy security, highlighting the role of the Sunon Asogli Thermal Power Station in stabilizing power supply during difficult times.
During her address at the 2026 Sunon Asogli Chinese New Year celebration on Monday, February 16, 2026, which commemorated the Spring Festival and the Year of the Horse, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang conveyed Ghana’s profound gratitude for the contributions of the thermal power plant in strengthening the national grid, especially during periods of power shortages.
She remarked that energy security is pivotal to Ghana’s industrialization efforts and long-term economic stability, asserting that a dependable power supply is essential for productivity, investment, and sustainable development.
The Vice President took the opportunity to reflect on the enduring diplomatic ties between Ghana and China, noting that these relations have progressed from formal connections to substantial cooperation in areas such as education, trade, industry, and technical exchanges.
While recognizing the infrastructural advancements resulting from bilateral cooperation, she stressed that development should extend beyond mere physical projects.
“Development is not solely constructed through infrastructure, but also through people, cultures, and mutual respect,” she remarked, emphasizing that lasting partnerships should be founded on clear objectives, accountability, and alignment with Ghana’s national development goals.
As Ghana endeavors to bolster its industrial foundation and secure its energy future, the Vice President reaffirmed the country’s willingness to engage in partnerships that are transparent, equitable, and mutually advantageous.
She added that the Spring Festival celebration offered a moment for renewal and contemplation, expressing optimism about Ghana’s trajectory in the upcoming year and its dedication to fostering resilient institutions, sustainable infrastructure, and shared prosperity.
