Michael Kpakpo Allotey has been unanimously appointed as the new Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), following a strong endorsement from Assembly Members during a Special General Assembly Meeting held on Tuesday at the Accra City Hall.
Mr. Allotey received all 30 valid votes cast, achieving a 100% approval rate in an election conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC), exceeding the two-thirds majority required by Section 20 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).
The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, who oversaw the voting process, urged Assembly Members to fulfill their constitutional duty by confirming the President’s nominee for the position of Metropolitan Chief Executive (Mayor).
She highlighted the strategic significance of the AMA, referring to it as “the center of Greater Accra,” and encouraged members to prioritize progress over political considerations. In his acceptance speech, Mr. Allotey expressed gratitude to Almighty God and extended his sincere thanks to President John Dramani Mahama for his appointment as Mayor.
“I am grateful to the President for placing this responsibility in the hands of a young man from North Kaneshie. It is a privilege I do not take lightly,” he stated.
Recognizing the contributions of his predecessors, the new Mayor committed to building on their successes while leveraging their insights and experiences. “I now take on the role of Mayor of Accra.
My predecessor has fulfilled her duties, and now it is my turn. Should I encounter any challenges, I can seek guidance from those who have served before me, ensuring there is no room for failure,” he asserted.
In alignment with the President’s vision, the new Mayor declared, “We are set to rejuvenate Accra—beginning now,” emphasizing that, “what God cannot do does not exist.
The representative of the Council of State for Greater Accra and Chairman of the Economic and Social Development Committee, Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey I, emphasized the need for courageous and visionary leadership.
He urged Mr. Allotey to address the city’s urgent issues, including sanitation, urban congestion, housing, youth unemployment, and social equity, with creativity and integrity. ‘Such leadership requires not only strategic vision but also compassion and discipline,’ he remarked.
Mr. Allotey, a seasoned entrepreneur and logistics specialist, has over ten years of experience in the real estate, petroleum, and transportation industries.
Prior to his appointment, he was a proponent of public-private partnerships and served as the CEO of Our God Is Good Real Estate, where he oversaw the development of more than 200 affordable housing units in peri-urban Accra, significantly contributing to job creation and infrastructure enhancement.
He has also held various leadership roles, including General Manager at KYG Consultancy and Lubricants, EXOLUBE Company Ltd, and Transport Manager at DIMD Ghana, where he implemented logistics reforms that improved operational efficiency and lowered costs.
Additionally, Mr. Allotey was the Director of Operations for the Okaikwei South Constituency and held multiple leadership positions within the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The confirmation ceremony, celebrated with drumming and festivities, was attended by Assembly Members, government officials, traditional leaders, party executives, and local residents.
