A suspect associated with the shooting that resulted in the death of a wildlife officer at the Kalakpa Forest Reserve in the Ho West District has been discovered deceased while in police custody at Abutia Kloe, where he was detained pending investigations.
Fredrick Tengey, the Assembly Member for the Abutia Kloe Electoral Area, reported that the suspect was found dead in the police cell, with signs suggesting it could be a case of self-inflicted injury.
So far, police officials have refrained from commenting on the situation, but the family of the deceased wildlife officer has been formally notified.
This incident follows the tragic shooting of a 28-year-old wildlife officer, known as Mr. Ganyo, during the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, while he was on patrol near the Zitoe Camp within the Kalakpa Forest Reserve.
As per the Forestry Commission, the officer was part of a patrol team that was responding to suspected poaching activities when they came across an armed individual near the reserve’s boundary.
“I received a call from the family of Raphael Ganyo, who was shot in the reserve. They informed me that the suspect had hanged himself and died in the cell. They confirmed the presence of the deceased body in the cell, but I have yet to verify this with the district commander.
