Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has urged the health professionals at the Tamale Teaching Hospital to end their strike following the termination of the Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Adam Atiku, due to alleged negligence that resulted in a patient’s death in the Accident and Emergency Ward.
In light of this, on April 24, doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital indefinitely suspended emergency and outpatient services, citing ‘unwarranted attacks’ from the Health Minister.
This decision was reached during an emergency general assembly meeting of the Doctors’ Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) on April 23.
In response to their concerns, the Health Minister has committed to prioritizing the needs of the hospital and its health practitioners to ensure its sustainability and improve its operations for the benefit of the community.
During a media briefing on April 24, the minister announced the ministry’s intention to provide equipment to support the doctors’ work and facilitate the smooth delivery of their services.
‘I earnestly appeal to the medical doctors and health practitioners at Tamale Teaching Hospital that I am dedicated to safeguarding your interests. Therefore, I urge you to end the strike so we can regroup and strategize for the future.
There are several initiatives we can undertake with our internally generated funds, so let us address the issues directly,’ he stated.
