A recent poll carried out by Global InfoAnalytics has identified Haruna Iddrisu, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South, as the foremost candidate to lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming 2028 general elections.
The survey indicates that Haruna Iddrisu enjoys 30% support, placing him ahead of NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who has 24%, and Finance Minister Ato Forson, who stands at 18%.
Chief of Staff Julius Debrah follows with 10%, while North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has secured 8%.
Other potential candidates, such as Eric Opoku, Joshua Alabi, Armah-Kofi Buah, and Kwame Awuah-Darko, each received 2%, with Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah at 1%. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije did not achieve significant support in the poll.

When evaluated in alternative scenarios, Haruna’s leading position becomes even more pronounced.
In a three-way contest excluding Ato Forson, he expands his lead to 45%, compared to Asiedu Nketia’s 37% and Julius Debrah’s 18%. Among NDC supporters specifically, his backing increases to 47%, demonstrating particularly strong appeal in crucial swing regions where he garners 48% support.
However, the dynamics change significantly if Haruna is not part of the race. In that case, Asiedu Nketia takes the lead with 40%, narrowly surpassing Ato Forson at 38%, while Julius Debrah holds 22%. Among core NDC voters, the competition becomes nearly tied—Asiedu Nketia at 42% and Ato Forson at 41%.
Interestingly, Forson performs best in the swing regions, where he surpasses Asiedu with 47% support compared to the Chairman’s 38%.
The results imply that while Haruna Iddrisu is presently the clear frontrunner, his absence would lead to a highly competitive two-candidate race between Asiedu Nketia and Ato Forson, potentially altering the NDC’s succession dynamics as they approach 2028.
