The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has initiated conversations with significant agencies, including the Registrar of Companies and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), to assist in identifying and monitoring businesses for effective tax compliance.
This initiative is part of the Authority’s comprehensive strategy to broaden the tax base and enhance domestic revenue generation.
Anthony Sarpong, the Acting Commissioner-General of the GRA, shared this information during an X-Space discussion organized by Imani Ghana and its media partners, centered on the theme, ‘Resetting Ghana’s Revenue Mobilization.’
He emphasized that the approach involves leveraging technology to expand the tax base, noting that many businesses have transitioned online and are engaging in transactions through various applications and platforms.
Furthermore, he mentioned that the GRA is working on integrating data through API with other institutions. For example, discussions have begun with the Registrar of Companies to ensure that all businesses and individuals registered with them are linked to the GRA’s data systems.
Mr. Sarpong also indicated that the Authority is collaborating with SSNIT to promote tax compliance among businesses, highlighting that while individuals may prioritize their social security contributions for retirement, they often neglect their tax obligations.
Therefore, it is crucial to partner with an organization like SSNIT to ensure that all businesses associated with them are identified and fulfill their tax responsibilities.
Additionally, he disclosed that the GRA intends to engage with business associations, particularly within the informal sector, to bolster its efforts in encouraging more individuals and businesses to declare and remit their taxes.
