President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans to establish three new technical universities as part of initiatives aimed at enhancing skills development and improving the educational landscape.
During his 2026 State of the Nation Address delivered in Parliament on Friday, February 27, President Mahama stated that the growth of technical universities will assist in bridging the skills gap in the country and addressing youth unemployment.
He elaborated that technical universities are essential in providing young individuals with industry-relevant and practice-oriented skills that correspond with national development goals.
“Technical universities are vital in closing the skills gap and mitigating youth unemployment by offering high-quality, industry-aligned, and practice-oriented training within a comprehensive policy framework that encourages labor demand,” he remarked.
The President indicated that the new institutions will foster innovation, support industrialization, and prepare Ghana’s workforce to meet the requirements of a contemporary economy.
In addition to the expansion of technical education, President Mahama also declared that 50,000 housing units would be constructed for teachers. This initiative aims to enhance the welfare and retention of educators, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
The housing initiative, which aims to provide 50,000 housing units, is a collaborative effort involving the District Assemblies Common Fund, GETFund, and the Ghana National Association of Teachers, among other partners.
He mentioned that the initiative is designed to improve teachers’ living conditions and ensure they can serve effectively and retire with dignity.
“This collaboration illustrates our shared commitment to improving teachers’ living conditions and enhancing retention, particularly in rural and remote regions,” President Mahama emphasized.
The announcement is a component of the government’s wider strategy aimed at enhancing human capital development, decreasing unemployment, and facilitating Ghana’s long-term economic transformation via education and skills training.
