Ghana’s President and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, John Dramani Mahama, has stated that the deployment of Army engineers to Jamaica represents a testament to the amicable relationship between the country and the Caribbean nation, as well as the broader international community.
In response to a recent hurricane that affected Jamaica, a contingent of Ghana Army engineers, consisting of eight officers and 45 soldiers, is being dispatched to aid in the construction of shelters and to support reconstruction initiatives.
During a farewell ceremony for the team held at the Jubilee Lounge in Kotoka International Airport on Wednesday, December 17, President Mahama articulated that this humanitarian endeavor will enhance the bilateral relationship between Ghana and Jamaica. He urged the team to conduct themselves with dignity and honor while proudly displaying the Ghanaian flag.
“Your conduct will influence how Ghana is viewed internationally. We anticipate that you will maintain professional excellence, show respect for local authorities and communities, demonstrate integrity and teamwork, look out for one another, and return home safely.”
President Mahama also conveyed his appreciation to the United States for its support in airlifting the troops to Jamaica.
“When we planned this mission, one of the significant challenges was the transportation of the troops to Jamaica. The United States of America stepped in and provided the necessary airlift capacity for the mission.
“I would like to extend my gratitude to our friends in the United States once more,” he remarked, wishing the troops a successful mission and a safe return.
