K.T. Hammond Criticizes Focus on Wealth in NPP Flagbearer Race, Backs Bawumia
Former Adansi Asokwa MP, Kobina Tahir (K.T.) Hammond, has taken a swipe at some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for reducing the 2026 flagbearer race to a competition based on wealth.
Speaking in Adansi Asokwa on Wednesday, September 10, Mr. Hammond expressed concern that the focus seems to have shifted from ideas and leadership qualities to who has the deepest pockets among the five aspirants who have filed nominations.
He reminded party members that the NPP was built on values like selflessness, sacrifice, and visionary leadership—not money.
“The NPP has always been blessed with many wealthy individuals,” he said. “But these people don’t make noise. They don’t show off their wealth or use it to demand leadership positions.”
Mr. Hammond made these comments during the start of a three-day tour by former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is engaging constituency executives in the Ashanti Region as part of his campaign for the party’s flagbearer slot. According to his team, Dr. Bawumia is using the tour to formally inform the executives of his plans to visit their constituencies and connect with delegates at the grassroots level.
Commending Dr. Bawumia’s approach, Hammond praised him for focusing on ideas and a vision for the party and the country, rather than relying on personal wealth to win support.
“In the early days, when things were really tough, many of us supported the party financially—but did you ever hear us talk about it?” he asked. “Even now, many people, including Dr. Bawumia, continue to support the party behind the scenes without making it a campaign point.”
He emphasized that leadership within the NPP has always been about vision and substance, not money. “Let’s go back to our roots. Let’s choose a leader who reflects the values and principles that define the NPP.”
K.T. Hammond ended his remarks with a strong endorsement of Dr. Bawumia: “I’m convinced that the person who best represents these values is Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Let’s support him and give him the mandate to lead the NPP into 2028. He has the vision and the ideas to deliver victory for the party.”
