President John Dramani Mahama has called upon contractors engaged in the Ofankor-Nsawam Road project to adhere to the established timeline and ensure that the project reaches completion by the conclusion of the second quarter of 2026.
During a site visit on Wednesday, September 3, Mr. Mahama, accompanied by the Minister of Roads, conveyed his optimism regarding the advancements made on this long-overdue project. He underscored the importance of sustaining progress and reducing inconvenience for motorists.
“I can observe that drivers are currently satisfied, and I trust that from this point until the project’s completion, you will ensure a continuous flow of traffic even while construction is ongoing, so as not to hinder traffic movement,” he stated while addressing the contractors.
He further remarked, “Therefore, we will hold you accountable for your commitments. You indicated that the project should be completed by the end of the second quarter next year.”
Mr. Mahama’s comments arise amidst increasing public apprehension regarding the condition of major highways and the issue of traffic congestion, particularly along significant commuter routes such as Ofankor-Nsawam.
The construction of the Ofankor road officially commenced in July 2022, under the previous Akufo-Addo administration, with an initial completion deadline set for July 2024.
Nevertheless, this completion target has been delayed multiple times due to financial constraints, leading to protests from drivers and residents over the severe traffic congestion and environmental pollution resulting from the ongoing construction.
