The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has urged a renewed national dedication to agricultural research, innovation, and collaboration with the private sector as Ghana strives to become a leading food-secure nation on the continent.
During the 41st National Farmers Day celebration held in Ho on Friday, December 5, 2025, the Minister pointed out that one of the primary challenges to Ghana’s agricultural advancement has been the persistent disconnect between scientific research and its practical application by farmers and industry.
“For decades, numerous agricultural research findings have remained on shelves, unseen by farmers and unutilized by industries,” he remarked.
“This year’s platform has initiated a new chapter by making research accessible to the public through a national live telecast.”
Mr. Opoku expressed hope that the creation of the Government Research Fund would facilitate agricultural transformation by ensuring that research outputs reach those who require them the most.
He characterized Ghana as a nation “blessed with immense agricultural potential,” asserting that with appropriate investment and resolute leadership, the country could soon become a prominent food producer in Africa.
While congratulating the award recipients at this year’s Farmers Day celebration, the Minister highlighted that the nation’s progress is closely linked to the prosperity of the agricultural sector.
“Every Cedi invested in agriculture yields an exponential return in food security, job creation, industry growth, and national stability,” he declared.
Mr. Opoku also called upon corporate Ghana to continue collaborating with the ministry through sponsorships, technical partnerships, and financial assistance aimed at enhancing innovations and establishing a resilient food system.
He concluded by urging all stakeholders to remain dedicated to fortifying agriculture as the cornerstone of Ghana’s development.
