Endurance Grand Says Her Tomboy Role in The Fisherman Mirrors Her Real Life
Ghanaian dancer and performer Endurance Grand says her role as a tomboy in the upcoming film The Fisherman isn’t just a character—it’s a reflection of her real-life identity and a message of authenticity and self-expression.
Endurance shared that playing the role felt deeply personal. “It’s more than just acting for me,” she said. “It’s about inspiring others to be themselves, unapologetically, without fear of judgment.”
She opened up about how she’s often faced criticism for not fitting into traditional expectations of femininity. “People used to ask, ‘Why don’t you wear earrings? Why don’t you wear skirts? Why don’t you do makeup?’ But as a dancer, I’ve gotten used to it,” she said. “The only thing that really gets to me is when people talk about things I truly value—like my family. That’s when I speak up.”
Despite the pushback, Endurance says she remains true to herself. “This is who I am, and it’s who I’ll always be. No matter how much people talk, it’s not going to change me.”
She expressed genuine excitement about landing the role, saying it gave her the chance to represent and share something deeper. “I was so grateful to play a tomboy because it allowed me to send a clear message: You can be your true self and still make a positive impact.”
She also emphasized that a person’s worth isn’t tied to how they look. “My appearance doesn’t define what I bring to the table. It’s not about how I dress or look. This movie really carries that message.”
Endurance also recalled the backlash she once faced when she chose to switch up her style and wore something more traditionally feminine. “I dressed like a lady once, and people on social media were quick to comment, saying things like ‘Berma [man] is wearing a dress.’”
Still, she says she embraces all sides of herself. “I’m very comfortable with my feminine side too. I switch it up depending on how I feel—but most days, I just prefer dressing like a tomboy.”
The Fisherman, written and directed by Zoey Martinson, also features Ricky Adelayitar, William Lamptey, and Kiki Romi. The film is set to premiere on September 19, 2025.
