The National Theatre was filled with sorrow and heartfelt tributes as Ghana’s filmmakers and industry professionals came together to pay their respects to the late veteran actor, Mawuli Yao Semevo.
The cherished actor sadly passed away on February 20, 2025, due to severe burns sustained in a fire accident at his residence.
He was celebrated not only for his remarkable talent but also for his kindness, wisdom, and commitment to the arts.
Veteran actor David Dontoh, who delivered a tribute on behalf of the Ghollywood community, was visibly emotional and shed tears during his speech.
James Gardiner, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority, also spoke on behalf of the authority, recognizing the lasting legacy of the late actor.
Fred Amugi and other veteran actors performed a moving choral piece, while a cultural troupe presented a traditional dirge in honor of Semevo.
Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Dzifa Abla Gomashie, along with veteran actress Irene Opare, attended the event to pay tribute to a man whose influence on the creative arts will always be remembered.
Other distinguished attendees included Catherine Afeku, Edinam Atatsi, Akofa Edjeani, and Inspector Bediako.
The vigil also featured the presence of the cast from YOLO, as the late actor had been actively involved in the production prior to his untimely death.
