Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has urged school authorities across the country to honor and protect the religious rights of students, enabling them to practice their faith freely and without limitations.
The Member of Parliament for Tamale South emphasized that every child in Ghana is entitled to the rights and freedoms outlined in the constitution, which includes the right to express their religious beliefs.
The Minister made this statement during the 2025 Eid-ul-Fitr prayers with the Ambariyya Muslim sect in Tamale on Monday, March 31.
He reiterated the significance of acknowledging religious diversity within educational settings, highlighting that schools should not implement policies that hinder students from practicing their faith.
“As Ghana’s Minister of Education, I want to make it clear that every child and every Ghanaian is entitled to fully enjoy all the rights guaranteed by the 1992 Constitution. Therefore, no school has the authority to deny any Ghanaian child the right to practice their religion.
“All educational institutions must acknowledge and respect the right of every Ghanaian child to profess and practice their faith,” he stated.
The Minister’s remarks come in response to concerns raised by the Ghana Muslim Students Association on Saturday, March 29, regarding the actions of the authorities at Saint Roses Senior High School (SHS) in Akwatia, Eastern Region, who prevented Muslim students from returning home to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, despite an official directive from the Ghana Education Service (GES).
