The Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, says that former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo can challenge her dismissal in court.
Justice Torkornoo was dismissed from her position on Monday, September 1, 2025, in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution. A statement from the Presidency indicated that this decision was made following the recommendation of a committee formed under Article 146(6) to investigate a petition submitted by a citizen, Mr. Daniel Ofori. Her dismissal took immediate effect.
Speaking with Selorm Adonoo, Dafeamekpor pointed out that the former Chief Justice can take the committee’s findings to the Supreme Court if she chooses.
“When Charlotte Osei [the former chairperson of the Electoral Commission] was removed through the Article 46 procedure, Kweku Baako [a prominent journalist] approached the Supreme Court to contest it. Isn’t that correct? The Chief Justice has the right to appeal to the Supreme Court against the committee’s findings and recommendations.”
He also said that being removed in this way does not mean the matter is over for the person involved.
“No one should assume that this is the final chapter. Kweku Baako did not receive a favorable ruling from the court. However, this does not imply that the committee’s findings cannot be contested in the Supreme Court; they certainly can,” he remarked.
