On March 4, 2025, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) successfully intercepted a significant cocaine shipment, confiscating approximately 3.3 tonnes of the illegal drug that was being transported to Accra from the Western Region.
Acting on received intelligence, NIB agents halted a tipper truck at Pedu Junction in Cape Coast, where they found 143 sacks of cocaine concealed under a layer of sand.
The truck, which was making its way from Takoradi to Weija, was occupied by two individuals who were promptly arrested.
Preliminary tests conducted by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) verified the substance as raw cocaine, with the initial seizure weighing 2,974 kilograms.
Subsequent investigations on March 8 led officers to the residence of a suspect, where they discovered an additional 13 sacks and one more bag of suspected cocaine, bringing the total to 345.07 kilograms.
Laboratory analyses performed by NACOC and the Ghana Standards Authority confirmed that the total weight of the consignment was 3,319.68 kilograms, with purity levels ranging from 50% to 70%.
The street value of the cocaine is estimated to exceed $350 million, and it is believed to have entered Ghana via maritime routes using fishing vessels.
As reported by 3news, two suspects, Isaac Quaicoe and Kenneth Cobbinah, have been remanded in custody and are set to appear in court again on April 2, 2025.
In addition, the NIB has identified other suspects who are still at large and is actively working to apprehend them to ensure that all parties involved face justice.
