The Barekese Water Treatment Plant (WTP) has been compelled to cease operations due to issues with power supply from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The management of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) clarified that the facility was shut down on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at 9 a.m., following a low-voltage power supply incident.
“Consequently, the plant has been shut down since 9 a.m. due to low voltage and is currently awaiting the restoration of normal power supply. Your cooperation during this period is greatly appreciated. Updates will be provided once power is restored and production resumes,” the statement indicated.
This shutdown is anticipated to affect water supply to numerous communities in the Ashanti Region that depend on the Barekese facility.
