Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has forecasted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is poised for a tumultuous flagbearer contest, as prominent members are already traversing the nation on campaign tours.
He indicated that the ongoing developments could lead to significant upheaval within the NDC, potentially resulting in divisions.
The Minority Leader urged the NDC to concentrate on their future and refrain from commenting on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) primary scheduled for January 31.
“The NDC is preoccupied with discussions about us. What they seem to overlook is that they, too, have a leadership contest on the horizon. When it is not your time, you point out that someone else’s house is ablaze.
“Their situation is even more dire. Currently, Asiedu Nketia claims he is embarking on a tour, while in reality, he is campaigning. What we are witnessing is that the government has its own candidate from the Jubilee House, and the party has its own candidate as well. Therefore, their time will come.
“The NDC should prioritize its own affairs and concentrate on its party. If precautions are not taken, President Mahama may become a lame duck President by the end of the year, as everyone around him is vying for power,” Afenyo-Markin remarked during a press conference on Monday, January 26, 2026.
He further stated: “The NDC’s flagbearer race is likely to be alarming. Thus, they should direct their attention to that and leave the issues concerning the NPP alone.”
With President Mahama nearing the end of his final term, the party is expected to present a new candidate for its presidential bid in the upcoming elections. Names of prominent figures within the party have already surfaced, including Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, party Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu.
It is anticipated that the party will encounter challenges in selecting its next flagbearer due to the current prominent figures that have emerged.
Nevertheless, other party members have disagreed with this viewpoint, asserting that the party will experience a smooth and successful flagbearer race without any turmoil.
