The Appointments Committee of Parliament will conduct a vetting of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie on Monday, November 10, 2025, for the position of Chief Justice.
The vetting process is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m., subsequent to his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama.
This information was confirmed through an official announcement made by David Sebastian Damoah, the Director of Media Relations at Parliament.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination follows the dismissal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who had held the position of Chief Justice since 2023. The session will provide Members of Parliament with the opportunity to assess the candidate’s qualifications, judicial philosophy, and vision for the Ghanaian justice system before making a recommendation to the House for approval.
In the meantime, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on Friday, November 7, rejected a motion put forth by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin that sought to suspend the vetting process until the resolution of pending court cases involving the former Chief Justice.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin contended that Parliament should postpone the exercise on constitutional and procedural grounds to prevent interference with ongoing judicial matters.
Nevertheless, the Speaker determined that there was no constitutional or procedural justification for halting parliamentary activities due to a court case, emphasizing that such an action would establish a perilous precedent.
