Two individuals, including an Assembly Member, have lost their lives due to violent confrontations between the residents of Mpatuam and military personnel in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region.
The events transpired on Monday and Tuesday, leading to heightened tensions within the community. The precise reason for the altercation remains uncertain.
Reports indicate that the clashes initiated when military forces confronted residents who were reportedly trying to encroach upon one of the mining concessions owned by Asanko Gold.
In a confirmation to Citi News, Sekyi Michael, the Assembly Member for the Mpatuam West Electoral Area, stated that one individual was killed during the confrontation on Monday.
He further noted that the military returned the next day, resulting in another clash with the residents. This subsequent incident led to the death of another individual, who was also serving as an Assembly Member.
Authorities have yet to provide an official statement regarding this situation.
