Former Auditor-General of Ghana, Daniel Yao Domelevo, has advised the incoming administration of John Mahama to remain mindful of the significant electoral victory they have achieved.
He emphasized that the substantial number of Members of Parliament (MPs) entrusted to former President Mahama during the December 7 elections is intended to empower him to implement beneficial initiatives for the nation.
“It is anticipated that he will establish a legacy that reflects four years of exceptional governance,” he stated.
“He should not assume that having a parliamentary majority allows for the passage of policies that may not serve the interests of the populace.”
“Any modifications or amendments to the Constitution and laws of Ghana that would promote improved governance are certainly welcomed.”
Mr. Domelevo expressed these sentiments while addressing the media in response to the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) decisive victory in the 2024 elections.
Additionally, he advocated for a complete separation of the roles of the Attorney General (AG) and the Minister of Justice to improve accountability.
He contended that it is untenable for a cabinet minister, such as the AG, to be held accountable by a fellow minister.
It is inconceivable for an individual to participate in cabinet discussions, contribute to policy decisions, and subsequently hold a colleague, fellow member of parliament, or cabinet member accountable for the outcomes of those decisions, especially when they have provided input during the decision-making process, he stated.
The former Auditor-General further urged Mr. Mahama to commence his efforts to recover the misappropriated funds immediately following his swearing-in, emphasizing the importance of persistence as there is significant work ahead.
He indicated that Mr. Mahama and his team should be aware that there will be no period of grace for them. They must begin their responsibilities without delay. Fortunately, Mr. Mahama is not inexperienced in this regard; he has previously held office and is familiar with the necessary actions.
From the very first day after his inauguration, he and his team should prioritize the immediate recovery of the misappropriated funds that he has pledged to retrieve.
It is imperative that he takes swift measures to ensure that these funds are not transferred out of the country, he remarked.
