The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to take immediate and effective measures to restore law and order in light of the recent developments following the 2024 general elections.
The GJA has raised alarms regarding reports of extensive assaults on state institutions, allegedly carried out by individuals thought to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
These incidents encompass acts of vandalism and unrest at significant government offices and facilities.
Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, the President of the GJA, addressed the media on Tuesday, December 10, and called upon President Akufo-Addo to act swiftly to ensure national stability.
Additionally, the GJA appealed to political leaders, civil society organizations, and all relevant parties to collaborate in reducing tensions and fostering peace. The association reminded citizens that upholding order and adhering to democratic principles are essential for maintaining Ghana’s status as a leading democracy in Africa.
“We are appealing to the President of the Republic, who remains in office until January 7 and serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to guarantee law and order and to ensure that Ghana retains the peace it enjoyed before and during the elections.
“I recognize that it is his constitutional duty to fulfill this role, and as long as he remains in office, we implore him to ensure that security forces are prepared to alleviate the tensions among Ghanaians.”
