In a landmark achievement, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, the Parliamentary Candidate representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has successfully captured the Dome Kwabenya constituency, a region that has long been regarded as a stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The election results, which were revealed late Sunday night following a closely fought contest, indicated that Akurugu received 51,634 votes, narrowly surpassing the NPP candidate, Mike Oquaye Jr., who obtained 50,477 votes.
Akurugu’s triumph signifies a pivotal moment, as it represents the first occasion on which the NDC has secured the Dome Kwabenya seat, a constituency historically dominated by the NPP.
In addition to the victory in Dome Kwabenya, the NPP experienced further setbacks, losing several historically significant constituencies to the NDC, including prominent areas such as Adansi Asokwa and Sekondi, among others.
