Mahama pledges to address illegal mining and advocate for sustainable mining practices

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has committed to implementing sustainable mining practices to combat environmental degradation in regions affected by illegal mining activities.

During a gathering with party supporters in Akrokkeri, located in the Fomena Constituency, on the third day of his six-day campaign tour in the Ashanti Region, Mahama recognized the significant contribution of small-scale mining to the local economy.

He assured miners that his administration would introduce policies designed to protect the environment while improving the livelihoods of those in the mining sector.

“I understand that in Adansi, small-scale mining is highly valued. The NDC will implement policies to support small-scale miners and ensure that the land is preserved for future generations,” Mahama remarked.

He emphasized the detrimental effects of illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, on the nation’s natural resources and promised to create frameworks that encourage responsible mining practices, including the restoration of degraded lands and the adoption of modern, environmentally friendly techniques.

Additionally, Mahama urged voters to focus on competence rather than political allegiance in the forthcoming general elections, encouraging them to choose a leader capable of tackling the urgent issues confronting the nation.

The Fomena Constituency, recognized for its mining activities, has been a central topic in discussions regarding environmental and economic sustainability, making Mahama’s commitments particularly relevant to local communities.
