COURT ORDERS UCC COUNCIL TO REFRAIN FROM OVERTURNING THE VICE CHANCELLOR’S RENEWED APPOINTMENT

Cape Coast High court has restricted the Council of the University Of Cape Coast from reversing the renewal appointment of the University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong.

This decision comes after the court granted an injunction, filed by a resident of Kasoa Millennium city, John Memeveo, in the central region, challenging the university’s decision to extend Professor Nyarko Boampong’s tenure, citing the contradictions with the 1992 constitution.

However, lawyers of the Vice Chancellor contested this, leading the court to grant a stay of execution and interlocutory injunction. As a result, the court has restrained the university, its governing council, chairman, and appointers from discussing and deliberating on any matter concerning the removal of the Vice chancellor.

This means that Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong will continue to perform his duty as Vice chancellor, as per his renewed appointment from August 1, 2024, to July 31, 2026, until the pending suit is resolved.

It’s worth noting that UCC has faced controversy in the past regarding appointments and governance. For instance, there were issues surrounding the appointment of the new registrar and director of human resources, with some council members objecting to the process.

The university’s council chairman, Professor Harold Stewart Amonoo Kuofi, was also criticized for unilaterally varying the content of the advertisement for the positions, inserting clauses that didn’t align with the UCC in 2016 statutes. Despite these challenges, the court’s decision provides clarity on the Vice chancellor’s appointment, ensuring stability in the university’s leadership.
