The Christian Council of Ghana has called on government to ban illegal mining until sustainable solutions are found
This request from the religious group comes at a time when the negative impacts of illegal mining on the environment, local communities, and the country’s future have reached critical levels, causing different stakeholders to demand quick and far-reaching action to combat the practice.
General Secretary of the Christian Council, Reverend Cyril Fayose, stated that galamsey poses an existential threat to Ghana’s natural resources, particularly water bodies, farmlands, and ecosystems.
Reverend Fayose emphasised the gravity of the problem, portraying it as a threat that must be addressed immediately.
He advocated for more than just condemnations and reactionary measures, underscoring that only a well-thought-out and comprehensive approach would be sufficient to secure Ghana’s future.
