The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has condemned recent attacks on its personnel, vowing to pursue strict legal action against perpetrators.
In two separate cases, firemen were physically and verbally abused while performing their duty.
According to a GNFS statement issued on Tuesday, September 10, ADO II Abdul Aziz Annor, a firefighter from the Ministries Fire Station, had a fractured ankle on September 3, 2024, after being attacked by a driver and his friend in Accra.
The incident happened as Annor was refilling the station’s fire vehicle at the La Palm T-Junction.
The suspects were arrested and given bail on September 9, 2024, with court dates set for October 24.
Two days later, firemen from the Dansoman Fire Station encountered a similar situation.
Residents yelled and physically harassed emergency officials as they responded to a fire near the Dansoman Roundabout.
Despite the attack, firefighters were able to contain the blaze with the help of extra fire trucks.
The GNFS has made it clear that assaulting firemen is a felony that will not be allowed.
The Service has stated that it will give the required care for the injured fireman and take all legal action to guarantee justice for all impacted individuals.
Meanwhile, the Dansoman Police are investigating the case to bring the offenders to justice.
The GNFS has encouraged the public to support and appreciate its members, who risk their lives every day to safeguard communities.
