Media figure Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah was apprehended on Sunday, July 12, 2026, following a disruption that affected the voting process during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Constituency Executive Elections in the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency of the Ashanti Region.
Eyewitness accounts and video evidence from the incident indicate that a group, reportedly led by Afrifa-Mensah, invaded the polling station during the early voting hours, causing alarm among delegates and party officials.
Sources at the polling centre claimed that some individuals within the group were armed, which escalated tensions as the situation developed. These allegations have yet to be independently confirmed.
Circulating video footage from the location depicted several men in civilian attire amidst a significant presence of armed officers from the Ghana Police Service.
A man, recognized by witnesses as Afrifa-Mensah and dressed in a green-and-black jersey with yellow stripes, was observed being escorted by police officers into the rear of a police vehicle. Additional individuals were also apprehended, while some managed to escape the area.
Law enforcement acted swiftly to restore order, cordoning off parts of the venue with red and white police tape and ensuring a security presence around the polling centre.
After the intervention, voting resumed and was reported to be proceeding smoothly, according to officials present at the centre.
As of the time of publication, the Ghana Police Service had not released an official statement confirming the arrests, the identities of those detained, or any potential charges.
Party officials called on delegates to remain composed and cooperate with security forces to ensure that the constituency executive elections are conducted in a peaceful, free, and transparent manner.
The NPP is conducting its Constituency Executive Elections throughout Ghana this weekend as part of its internal reorganization in preparation for the 2028 general elections.
