The Chairman of the Elections Committee of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Peter Martey Agbeko, has reiterated the committee’s dedication to ensuring a credible and transparent electoral process in anticipation of the forthcoming national and regional elections.
In a statement released on Tuesday, June 24, Mr. Agbeko indicated that the committee, in partnership with a technical advisor from the Electoral Commission of Ghana, is diligently working to ensure a smooth and equitable election. He reassured stakeholders that the process would adhere to the fundamental principles of democracy.
“Alongside my diligent committee members and under the expert guidance of our advisor from the Electoral Commission of Ghana, we are steadfast in our commitment to organizing, conducting, and supervising a credible, transparent, and fair election by best practices,” he stated.
Mr. Agbeko also expressed concerns regarding what he termed as efforts by certain individuals to undermine the process. He pointed out that while constructive criticism is appreciated, unfounded allegations compromise the integrity of the elections.
“It is regrettable when individuals impose their standards on others and attempt to instill doubt without providing verifiable evidence. Valid concerns are welcomed and will be addressed based on their merit,” he stressed.
In response to the controversy surrounding proxy voting, he clarified that it remains a legitimate component of contemporary electoral systems and assured that appropriate safeguards are established to prevent misuse.
“Despite the unexpected challenges, we successfully conducted the election. I mention this to highlight our resilience and commitment to our responsibilities,” he reflected.
As tensions rose in the lead-up to the elections, Mr. Agbeko made it clear that he would continue in his position and oversee the process until its conclusion. “This Chairman is not going anywhere. I plan to see this process through with fidelity, professionalism, and to the glory of God and the service of our Association.”
He mentioned that a stakeholder engagement is set to occur later in the evening, which will include all candidates, the Elections Committee, and the Technical Advisor from the Electoral Commission. The purpose of the meeting is to enhance transparency and encourage unity as the GJA approaches the concluding phases of its electoral process.
The GJA elections are planned for Monday, June 30, 2025.
