The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has successfully reclaimed key airport properties from the McDan Group of Companies following a favorable court decision.
This ruling, issued by an Accra High Court on May 6, 2025, grants GACL complete re-entry and control over more than 16 acres of land that were previously occupied by McDan Group subsidiaries.
The properties, comprising approximately 10.63 acres and 5.66 acres, are situated adjacent to and opposite Action Chapel International, near Kotoka International Airport. These lands had been under the control of McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited, both part of the McDan Group, since 2012.
In February 2025, GACL initiated legal action against these entities, citing persistent violations of land lease agreements and unpaid ground rents, amounting to $26,296.
The company also sought a permanent injunction to prevent the defendants from interfering with the properties. After legal proceedings, GACL requested a summary judgment, asserting that the defendants lacked a valid defense.
The court ruled in favor of GACL, granting all requested reliefs and ordering the defendants to pay GH¢50,000 in legal fees. In December 2024, McDan Aviation’s operations at Terminal 1 of Kotoka International Airport were halted due to outstanding debts. Although these debts were subsequently settled, the land dispute persisted until this legal resolution.
The management of GACL has praised the court’s ruling as a major victory in asset recovery.
“The retrieval of these properties not only protects state assets valued in the millions but also strengthens our dedication to accountability and the lawful administration of public resources,” remarked a company insider.
The successful legal proceedings are attributed to the joint efforts of GACL’s Legal Department and the Managing Director, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, who led the initiative for asset recovery.
Following this development, GACL is anticipated to consider new strategies for the reclaimed properties, possibly focusing on aviation-related growth or strategic collaborations, as part of broader initiatives to enhance airport infrastructure and increase revenue.
