Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 Presidential Candidate for the New Patriotic Party and former Vice President, has announced plans to amend the NPP constitution in preparation for the 2028 election.
He highlighted that one of the proposed changes involves the party’s delegate system, which will be broadened to enable a greater number of party members to participate in the election of the Presidential Candidate and party officials.
During a gathering of party supporters at the NPP Headquarters on April 23, 2025, Dr. Bawumia elaborated that this expansion of the delegate system is intended to strengthen the party and engage more individuals in the electoral process.
He asserted, ‘You can expect without any doubt that the delegate system is going to change. We will modify the current system to allow more individuals to vote, thereby granting more people the opportunity to be part of the electoral college.’
Furthermore, Dr. Bawumia disclosed that around 2.1 million party supporters did not cast their votes, which he believes significantly contributed to the party’s defeat. He remarked, ‘Despite our diligent efforts, we still faced a substantial loss. Analyzing the situation reveals that the issue was internal; many of our supporters chose not to vote.
This is fundamentally why we lost the election. Comparing 2020 to 2024, 2.1 million of our supporters abstained from voting. Therefore, the key to victory lies within the NPP, as our decision not to vote led to our loss. If we choose to vote, we will secure victory.’
