NDC nominates Bagbin as Speaker of 8th Parliament

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has nominated the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban S. K. Bagbin, for Speaker in the eighth Parliament.

The decision was taken at a Functional Executive Committee (FEC) meeting of the NDC in Accra on Wednesday, 5 January 2020.

The NDC also maintained the current Minority Leader, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, as the Majority Leader; the Deputy Minority Leader, Dr James Klutse Avedzi, as the Deputy Majority Leader and the Minority Chief Whip, Mr Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, as the Majority Chief Whip.

The others are the First Deputy Minority Whip, Mr Ibrahim Ahmed, as the First Deputy Majority Whip and the Second Deputy Minority Whip, Mrs Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, as the Second Deputy Majority Whip.

Meanwhile, both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC have equal seats in the House.

It is unclear which party will form the majority but just like the NDC, the NPP has also selected its leaders claiming to be the majority in the house.

To this end, the NPP has chosen Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye to serve as Speaker of the eighth Parliament.

The NPP also maintained the MP for Suame Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as its parliamentary leader.

Alex Afenyo-Markin, the Effutu MP will serve as his deputy.

The Chief Whip position goes to Frank Annoh Dompreh, the Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP.

His deputies will be Tolon MP Habib Iddrisu and the Ayawaso West Wuogon MP Lydia Alhassan.

The 7th Parliament of the Fourth Republic will stand dissolved at midnight, today, 6 January 2021 in accordance with Article 113(1) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

At 12:01 am on 7th January, the Elected Members of the 8th Parliament will convene in the Chamber of Parliament to elect a Speaker and Two Deputy Speakers, in accordance with Articles 95, 96 and 100(2) of the 1992 Constitution, after which the elected Members of the 8th Parliament will be sworn in by the Speaker at the Chamber of Parliament as per Article 100(1) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
