Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has declared his intention to reach out to the newly appointed Attorney General and Minister for Justice to seek guidance regarding the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.
During an address to the Ghanaian community in Côte d’Ivoire on January 26, 2025, Bagbin underscored the significance of the bill, which had previously been approved by Parliament but was not signed into law by former President Akufo-Addo, a decision he characterized as unconstitutional.
“The LGBTQ bill received parliamentary approval, yet the former president declined to sign it, which was unconstitutional. There exists no legal provision that permits the president to refuse or neglect to assent to a bill that has been passed by Parliament.
“Parliament holds the authority to enact laws, not any other individual, including the president. That decision was erroneous, and you all held him accountable for it,” Bagbin remarked.
He reiterated his commitment to ensuring the bill’s passage within the current year, emphasizing its importance.
“I will be writing to the new Attorney General and Minister for Justice to obtain his insights so that we can present it to the new president for his approval. This process will not be lengthy; it will be enacted this year. It is against divine principles… No one should take this lightly when it concerns me. I would risk my life for this cause,” he stated.
