The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has instructed a newly formed 7-member technical committee to engage in extensive consultations with stakeholders in the power distribution sector and to devise a detailed plan for the privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) within a month.
This committee, which includes energy specialists and significant stakeholders, is responsible for developing strategies aimed at transitioning ECG to private sector management, prioritizing enhancements in efficiency and service delivery.
In a media interview following the committee’s inauguration, Mr. Jinapor emphasized that the government does not intend to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana as part of this initiative.
“I want to reassure the public that we have not made a decision to sell ECG; our goal is to involve the private sector while also promoting local participation.
“We aim to conduct this process in a transparent, effective, and responsible manner. The committee is expected to consult all relevant stakeholders, including employees, unions, consumers, and other key parties.
“We have instructed them to complete these consultations within one month. Our objective is to establish a highly competitive and transparent process to revitalize the sector. The energy sector is in distress, and if immediate action is not taken, it risks collapse,” he stated.
