On Saturday, January 4, 2025, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo inaugurated the 250-bed Ashanti Regional Hospital along with a 50-bed Infectious Disease Centre located in Sewua, within the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region.
The Ashanti Regional Hospital in Sewua is now recognized as the third largest hospital in the Ashanti Region, following the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and the newly completed Afari Military Hospital. This facility is anticipated to alleviate the burden on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, which ranks as Ghana’s second-largest referral center after the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
In conjunction with the 50-bed Infectious Disease Centre—one of twelve facilities established with COVID-19 funding nationwide to address infectious diseases—this hospital, now the largest regional hospital in the country, plays a crucial role in enhancing healthcare delivery in the region. It ensures that residents have seamless access to universal health coverage and improved health outcomes.
This state-of-the-art health facility is comprehensively equipped, featuring an administration block, outpatient department, physiotherapy services, gynecology wards, sterilization units, an intensive care unit, maternity and delivery suites, a laboratory, pharmacy, surgical theatre complex, laundry services, and a medical gas plant for the production of medical gases.
This initiative is part of the nine Euroget hospital projects launched by former President John Agyekum Kufuor in 2008.
Out of these nine hospitals, seven, which had been left incomplete after the Kufuor administration ended in 2009, have been successfully completed under President Akufo-Addo’s leadership.
The nine Euroget Hospitals include the 500-bed Military Hospital at Afari in Kumasi, the 160-bed Wa Regional Hospital, the 250-bed Ashanti Regional Hospital at Sewua, and the 100-bed Ga East Municipal Hospital at Kwabenya.
In addition to the five 60-bed hospitals located in Tepa, Konongo, Twifo Praso, and Madina, these facilities are integral to the project.
President Akufo-Addo urged the workers, along with the Chiefs and residents of the region, to ensure that rigorous maintenance protocols for the facility and its equipment are diligently followed.
In addition to the Infectious Disease Centre inaugurated today in Sewua, President Akufo-Addo also opened another Infectious Disease Centre at the Kumasi South Hospital in Chiraptre.
Nana Kwaku Amankwaa Sarkodie, the Chief of Sewua, expressed his appreciation to President Akufo-Addo for the successful completion of the project initiated by their son, former President J.A. Kufuor.
He also conveyed his gratitude to the government for appointing Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister for Education, and Simon Osei Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Minister, both of whom are natives of the area.
