The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is set to conduct private examinations in January and February 2026, following a significant drop in performance observed in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), especially in Core Mathematics and Social Studies.
John Kapi, who serves as WAEC’s Head of Public Relations, made this announcement during an interview on Friday, 5 December.
Mr. Kapi elaborated that the initiative for private examinations, which was introduced in 2024, provides candidates with an additional chance to enhance their grades.
“Indeed, we initiated the first series last year [2024]. This is a practice that was already being implemented by our neighboring country, hence we conducted the first series that took place in January and February 2025.
“Therefore, in January/February 2026, we will be organizing another private examination. Candidates who are interested can register now, as the registration period is open until the end of December 2025. They are encouraged to register and prepare thoroughly,” he stated.
He urged prospective candidates to utilize the registration portal, which will remain accessible until the end of December 2025.
“They should focus on their studies and prepare themselves to take the exam, and I am confident they will achieve the necessary grades for admission into tertiary institutions,” he added.
WAEC has not yet provided further details regarding additional measures to tackle the overall decline in performance; however, the Council is optimistic that the private examinations will assist candidates in improving their prospects for gaining admission into tertiary institutions.
